The Alderney Society and Museum, High Street, Alderney GY9 3TG

As the official Alderney Society and Museum site is now up and running I will shortly take down this version.

The society produces an Annual Bulletin covering Archive Records, History, Archeology, Natural History etc. Occasionally there are pieces about Family History.

Located in the old school building, next to the oldest cemetery and the remains of the original Parish Church of St Anne, the Museum has small displays covering all aspects of Alderney's history. Of particular interest to family historians with English connections will be George Reynold's Lithograph (1852) of the construction of the Alderney Breakwater and the British Regiments stationed in Alderney list and display, which begins in 1732. The map collection is also worth studying.

For details of the 1940 'Census' of Alderney at the Museum - see Evacuation and Occupation.

The society's archives are also in this building and are presently being catalogued. I understand they include some of the older school registers but, on a visit to the Island (September 1997), the archivist was unavailable and this will have to be investigated further. I am also looking into the possible survival of Militia Lists and other items that may be of use to genealogists.
