The Szabó Family
Ivan Nagy's "The Families of Hungary, Their Coats of Arms and Generation Tables" states that the Szabó (Zabó) family of Felsöeör were one of many placed on the Western borders of Hungary by King László in the 14th Century. They were granted noble status for their service, status that, due to the many upheavals during Hungary's history, had to be reconfirmed from time to time (1327, 1582, 1611 and 1733).

In 1611 Gyòrgy and Gergely Szabó received a consolidation of their rights and in 1733 János II, son of János Szabó I, had his status confirmed.

János II and his connection to the Szabós of 1611 is unconfirmed at present. Likewise, the names of any of his other children have yet to be found .

The Edelényi Szabó Family
According to family legend, József, son of János II, was apprenticed to a blacksmith in Felsöeör at a young age, but his master was killed in an accident and Jószef fled, thinking he was to blame.

He went north to Edelén in County Borsód for a few years, before homesickness brought him back south where he settled in Pápa, far enough away from Felsöeör to feel safe.

There he became known as József of Edelén (Hungarian: Edelényi). His sons knew their true name and after his father's death Sandor applied to legally readopt it. A agreement was reached whereby the family in Pápa could call themselves Edelényi Szabó, and the name comes into use in the following generation.

Not all the branches changed to the double barrelled surname immediately. Most notably that of the eldest son József.
