I started drumming a long time ago, longer than most people would care to remember. In 1970 - I switched from kit drumming to hand drums; inspired by Santana. Being a disc jockey got in the way for a while, although now and again I would play a number or two with Skintight at the Inn on the Park or would turn up at the Jazz Jams on Sunday afternoon at Sands and other long gone locations, featuring the late (and much missed) Jack Duff. When the DJing stopped in 1982 so did the drumming - or least playing drums - for the last 18 years I have been playing the steering wheel of my car, my desk, the tops of filing cabinets, empty water tubs from the drinks machine, you get the picture!

My love of Jazz, Latin and other World Music never went away and all have became fashionable again so, surrounded by the sounds that made me want to play, I finally surrendered - signing up in the summer of 2000 for percussion classes led by Ronnie Weiss at the Arts Centre. Slowly my chops came back and with them came a sudden obsession to collect drums.

My collection has grown and now consists of congas, bongos, timbales, tablas, djembe, doumbeck, derbouka, talking drums, qweeka, udu drums, kalimba, kpanlogo, sogo, ewe drums, dholak, slit drums, balafon, berimbau, tamboura, au go gos, gumba, african bells, chekere, claves, guiro, vibraslap, rainstick, wave drum, Tibetan finger cymbals, caxixi, various other shakers and loads of things that rattle and bang. Just invested in some bata drums - something new to learn! The house is beginning to look a little cluttered!! They all get played, thanks to the Dave André Band and Monkfish (who I jam with at the Blue Note Bar on some Saturday afternoons), the Acoustic Music Club, the Watersplash Open Mic Sessions, the Jersey Drum Circle and the Community Drum Jams.
